Going Warrior-Mode on Annoying Mental Blocks

Going Warrior-Mode on Annoying Mental Blocks

Mental blocks are a universal problem experienced by athletes, creatives, students, entrepreneurs, corporate employees and blue-collar workers alike. Almost everyone will have to overcome one or more mental blocks to reach their goals.

It’s true that fear of failure, self-doubt, lack of motivation and fuzzy focus will all wreak havoc on your success, says Entrepreneur. But you can go warrior-mode on those mental blocks and defeat them.

Figure out the Problem

Before you can blast through any mental block, you must first identify what it is. According to Asian Efficiency, the most common mental blocks include self-doubt, indecision, fixed mindset, comparison, uncertainty, no limits and tunnel vision. These blocks are not always evident, however. They’re internal and can be hard to uncover, but you can figure them out by examining your thoughts and actions.

For example, if you have too many conflicting ideas flitting through your mind, you may be suffering from indecision. If you try to do multiple things but can’t concentrate on one of them long enough to complete it, you may have a no-limits mindset. Whatever is bothering you, your thoughts and actions will give you the insight you need to discover what your mental block is.

Brainstorm Multiple Solutions

Once you understand the issue, it’s time to brainstorm for a solution. You can start by listing any ideas that come to mind, or you can try a few old-school brainstorming techniques:

  • Teleporting storming – Pretend you’re in an alternate place or time. How would you deal with the situation in different circumstances?
  • Idol storming – How would your role model handle the situation? Put yourself in their shoes to figure out the solution.
  • Mind the gap – Write down the steps you need to take to get from point A to point B.
  • Reverse storming – Think about the issues that might prevent you from reaching your goal and write down the opposite approach.

It’s good to have a lot of ideas, but too many may distract you. For this reason, limit your list to a reasonable number that you know you can handle.

Implement a Solution Immediately

Warrior-mode is all about taking fierce action quickly. Skim through your list of solutions for one that stands out from the rest. That’s the one you’re going to implement — immediately. Don’t take time to think through the process. That will only allow self-doubt to seep in. Trust your instincts. There’s a reason why that solution stood out from the rest. Do it without thinking and evaluate the results later.

If you find that you haven’t moved past your mental block despite implementing a solution, pick another one from the list and try it. Keep working at it until the mental block fades away.

You may not be able to avoid mental blocks, but you can blast them out of your way when they arise. Rely on your inner warrior to figure out the problem, brainstorm your options and implement the solution. Each time you do so successfully, you’ll become more confident in your ability to overcome anything life — or your brain — throws at you.
